INTERVIEW } Jiyoung talks about her experience in the set of Higanbana

Jiyoung is starring in an NTV drama "Higanbana~Keishicho sosa nana ka~" wherein she plays the role of Kaoruko Nagami, a medical examiner, along with Horikita Maki as Nagisa Kinomiya, the lead role.

Q: What kind of character is Kaoruko Nagami?
A: Kaoruko is a returnee (kikokushijo, referring to the children of Japanese expatriates who take part of their education outside Japan) and a medical examiner. Although she's not in the crime scenes with the 7th division they support each other, and their job is to find new informations about the case.

Q: Is there a point where you're having a hard time with this role?
A: Since it's a medical examiner role, there are lots of medical terms. Even though she's a returnee, it's still a Japanese role, the pressure of getting a perfect Japanese when speaking is strong. So, I'm focusing with my intonation, and I'm doing my best. And since I work with really talented seniors, I think I cannot afford to make a mistake, so I also ask my manager to help me in memorizing.

Q: In 2014, Higanbana was broadcasted as a special drama, what was your reaction when you heard that it would become a continuous drama?
A: I heard that it's unusual for a SP drama to become a series, so I was very happy. My co-stars are famous actors and great seniors. They're very impressive, being able to see them again was fun. Also during the SP drama, my schedule was full so I couldn't even talk to them. This time, I can have fun with them.

Q: The episode 5 will be a feature episode of Kaoruko. She'll reveal that she has a sister, how was to play the sister role?
A: Since I'm the youngest child in real life, I couldn't imagine myself as the older sister. Onaka Kotomi plays the role of my little sister, and she was very kind, so it was easy to play the role.

Q: You have lots of scenes with the 7th division, what kind of talks you have with them during breaks?
A: The other day, I was talking with Maki-san, and she's active in various genres with movies, stage plays, and dramas, right? So I asked "What job is the most fun?", then she replied, "All things are fun in different ways. I think that you too will do a lot of things from now on. Good luck and do your best.", she encouraged me.

Q: What do you want to challenge in the future?
A: No matter how much I practice Japanese, it's still difficult to perfect. That's why to lessen the actions and script, I would like to do musicals (laughs). Of course, there's still script in a musical, but it's also good if it will be covered by a song.

"When time passes I can switch, but Japanese reactions just keep on coming. It's hard," Jiyoung said. "If there's a switch in my head, then now I'm completely thinking in Japanese. While thinking of words for this calendar, I wrote it with my papa. I'm glad to feel that my Japanese vocabulary has increased."

♢Published in three languages
In addition, the 31 words were published in three languages, "I did my best in writing it (in English) because of my fans all over the world. But the meaning of Korean in Japanese when translated is different that's why it's hard," Jiyoung said. Finally, Jiyoung appealed, "I wrote with the feeling that I think everyone should hold on to these words and do their best. I think it's good if you put it in the door and look before you go out. Q: The 2nd turning point you gave is the drama "Tamiou". What's the reason behind this?
A: It's my first (japanese role). I changed bodies with a politician/father. I played an Oyaji role. Since then I'm called 'OyaJiyoung' (laughs)

Q: You must change various stuff like the way how you sit, and others except your voice.
A: The thing I changed the most is my voice. If the voice is not low, they won't think we changed bodies. *Jiyoung tried doing the OyaJiyoung voice*

Q: You played Kusakari Masao-san's role. There's a big age gap...
A: Kusakari-san gave me good advice... the time when we're reading the scripts together, I was so nervous. He said "It's okay, Jiyoung-chan!" and it made me really happy.

Q: Do you always observe Kusakari-san?
A: Yes...Kusakari-san's role has a habit of saying "Mmmmmm" before speaking, and he's naturally good with it. I had hard time with it.

Q: It was hard but do you feel rewarded?
A: There were people who said "The one who played Murano Erika's role is a Korean? I thought she's Japanese." and, "Her acting as well as her Japanese improved a lot", I was moved to see those comments. Since I didn't expect to get a Japanese role quickly, to be able to do it is fun, and I want to play more roles. It became a very important work.

Q: A book that summarizes Jiyoung's 21 years is now on sale. Title is?
A: Grow up!

Q: Did you wanted to put this kind of book?
A: I thought of it, but there are already lots of stylebooks out there. Very fashionable, full of clothes and bags. That's why I said, "I don't have those! I won't make a style book!" (laughs) So to change directions, I made a style book containing where I studied abroad, my favorite place, and private photos from my laptop.

Q: Your new movie "How Is The Sky Over There?" from Kitagawa Eriko who also wrote Orange Days and Long Vacation will be out soon. Will this also get the girls' hearts?
A: Unfortunately, it's not a love story.

Q: What kind of role will you play?
A: This time it will be a Korean girl: Ena who speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese and Korean. But she's speaks more in Japanese, and the narration is also in Japanese. The setting was in Hong Kong so I have to speak Mandarin and Cantonese. It was difficult.

Q: A person who speaks 4 languages?
A: Yup. Ena went through a lot of countries due to family circumstances. She have a dream to achieve in Hong Kong. She's a nice girl chasing her dream.

Q: Jiyoung as an actress is now getting known. What kind of actress image do you aim from now on?
A: I want to be an actress who is not caught in only one frame. Also, I want to become a cool actress. Like Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson. I want to be an actress that even women love.

Q: Do you want a Hollywood debut?
A: If possible (laughs)

Q: When?
A: 10 years from now (laughs)

Host: After 10 years, you'll be 30 years old. But it's great if you could go up there on Hollywood! We are looking forward to your future success! Also, Ansatsu Kyoshitsu -Sotsugyou Hen- (Assassination Classroom: Graduation) is now announced! Everyone's looking forward to it!

ARTICLE } Jiyoung challenges the Oyaji (old man) role

Every week during the broadcast of Friday night drama “Tamiou” (TV Asahi), the leader of the Kazuhito party: Kuramoto (Kusakari Masao) had interchanged bodies with the university student: Murano Erika, played by Jiyoung, whom we had interviewed.

For her, this will be the first “Japanese role”. The role was setting articles like “the mysterious university student”, as it was very mysterious at first. In the third episode aired on August 14, the shocking truth was revealed. “At first, Erika is just the mysterious university student. But at the end of episode 3, it is now evident that my role is replaced by the old man Kuramoto. It is the main highlight, I think. This time my body is a young girl’s, but inside is an old man (laughs)” Jiyoung said.

The role looks like a beauty model and the inside is an old man, with that, Jiyoung looks at the old man everyday to be aware. “First, I’m trying to have a low voice when speaking. Then having a crab legs gesture when walking, and also the sitting posture. Whatever it takes to look like an old man, I do research everyday. And the private me also become an old man. (laughs)”

The role Jiyoung playing is not your typical old man. The leader of the opposite party of Muto cabinet, “Mr. Dandy-ism” Kusakari-san. “The dialogue of the political system is very difficult. Also, when you say “Kusakari-san”, he is characterized as a big actor. When playing the habits of each other, it is already determined, but it’s still difficult. The facial expressions also when talking, Kusakari-san before occasionally speaking gives a unique high voice. Like “Hmm,” (laughs) I wonder if I can ever do that successfully.” Jiyoung said as she analyzes the characteristics and the hardships.

In addition, Jiyoung gave an unexpected reaction when asked to imagine if she had been replaced with her real father. “I also hate entering old man I don’t know, (laughs) but I think if I’ll be replaced with my dad, it’s not interesting. The thing itself is interesting as gender changes, it’s fresh.”
Speaking of Tamiou, off-shots of the filming is published there, whoever cast hits the scene was having fun, and of course Jiyoung also seems having fun among good company. “Though we’re still getting used to each other, shooting was always fun. Even in extreme heat, everyone is always happily chatting. Since it’s comedy, we’re talking seriously on how to make it more funny. The other day, I sang with Suda Masaki-san, and he was playing the guitar! It was really fun!”, she said with large eyes shining.

Your impression of Endo Kenichi and Suda Masaki was different than I have imagined. “Endo-san has a scary image at first, but when you meet him closely and see him perform Sho-kun, I can’t help but to see it cute (laughs) On the day of cranking, in the Yamikumo where changed bodies happened, I was there with Suda-san, before the exchange, he was very feminine, but after it, he immediately changed to a man, it was very cool!”

Also, the appearance of the cast to dance together in the ending song “Stress Free” has attracted topic. Especially Jiyoung’s dancing, described as “Kirekkire!” (Graceful, Cute) “It’s not usual that all the actors dance together, right? That’s why it’s fun! Also, it was a long time since I danced, (laughs), I was amused.” Jiyoung said as she smiled.

At the Tamiou event, there was a question, “What if you exchanged bodies with someone (something)?” Then Jiyoung said “Anyone? Then my cat would be good (laughs) he’s the only family I have in Japan, that kid is absolutely free on his own. Badly speaking, he’s a little shameless…but if I would become like him then I would like it to be that way.” she replied cutely.
Then, since it’s a political drama, we requested a manifesto from Jiyoung. “It’s already one year since I started being an actress in Japan, ‘Tamiou’ is very big for me, and I think is a very important work. My first Japanese role, and first old man role (laughs) That’s why I’ll keep on practicing my dialogues, do my best in playing a hard role, for the next work, Jiyoung herself will step up.”,Jiyoung gave a strong declaration.

Finally Jiyoung thinks of Tamiou’s highlight. “Kuramoto is Taizan’s eternal rival. They might be friends along ago, it now embraces the emotions that comes in competition with political parties. But with the exchange of bodies of the parent and son, perhaps their bonds will deepen. This drama also have warm stories about family, and of course about politics. Also, you can see Jiyoung you haven’t seen before! Jiyoung x Oyaji collaboration, Please look forward to OyaJiyoung! (laughs)”

ARTICLE } Jiyoung breaks new ground with her Japanese role

It’s exactly one year since her activities started as an actress mainly in Japan. The title “former member of the original KARA” became completely unnecessary for Jiyoung as she showed a new face as an actress that can challenge any role. The bizarre story wherein the Prime Minister and his son changed body and soul, drama “Tamiou” (TV Asahi) aired its third episode this 14th of August. Jiyoung who plays as a female college student was recently revealed that she changed bodies with the Prime Minister’s political opponent. Jiyoung will play an Oyaji (old man/fatherly) role with a female college student’s appearance. She will break a new ground in the acting industry, and with that, we just heard her one year in Japan, including “now”.

◆In a blink of a year, I remember all the things
――It’s your first time to experience Japan’s summer, right?
【Jiyoung】 I came here in Japan last year on the end of August, though that time was already cool, this year was very hot! When we had a location in Tamiou’s university campus from morning to night, I couldn’t say any word because of the heat, I felt like my body was going to melt. (laughs)
――Did your appetite ever fell?
【Jiyoung】 Not at all. (laughs) Like Japan’s Unagi, Korean food Samgyetang has also a day to eat. On that day, I ate with my manager. Thanks to that there’s no summer feels at all.
――Your first year activities as an actress in Japan walked smoothly, right?
【Jiyoung】 It was really just a blink. I still remember all the things I was doing in every moment. From people who watched Assassination Classroom, I received comments like “I didn’t know it was Jiyoung from KARA”.
――Let’s focus on the role. When you started being an actress until now, did you changed points regarding effort towards acting?
【Jiyoung】 I already know how to speak Japanese more now. I ask myself “Should I do it like this?” and consult. On acting, I put a little bit of ad-libs.

◆I have studied a lot of men (laughs)
――In such situations, in Tamiou, it has come to this point of the story where you switched hearts with an old man (oyaji), and the role’s level of difficulty is high. The Korean Jiyoung-san will only play the Japanese role though the hurdle is not low. What did you thought when you were offered this work?
【Jiyoung】 To be honest, I just felt anxiety whether I could do this role or not. Then my manager said “It’s okay. You can do it. It will be amazing if you’ll do this.” and pushed me in the back with all his strength (encouragement). When I read the novel, it was very interesting. “Be confident, Jiyoung!”, I said to myself. Then I did some Oyaji research.
――In what way?
【Jiyoung】 When I heard father said “What if you met a friend who swapped with me?”, I observed man everyday (laughs) Also, a man in the television was rubbing his chin in a meeting. I thought “It’s a real man.” (laughs) And you can’t put your arm in you hips, and they open their legs when sitting. I study them a lot (laughs)
――Can you impersonate Kusakari Masao’s role: Kumamoto?
【Jiyoung】 Though I saw the work of the cast, Kusakari-san’s gestures are very dandy, and it’s beautiful. It’s not very Oyaji-like. However, from the drama’s first episode, Kuramoto said “Hmm..” while thinking. It was very unique so it’s hard to imitate it. (laughs) It’s interesting.
――Did you have a “Oyaji practice”?
【Jiyoung】 We had supervision on shooting. Although there’s an order to follow, making a funny scene will make it interesting. Now, I don’t deny that I’ve been practicing (laughs) However how strange the face is, I don’t care at all, and it’s fun. I don’t care with my image. They won’t see Jiyoung in the role and they’ll say “She did it way to far?!” and there may be some who will be disappointed. But to be able to do two things in this role, I’m happy that I was able to do things up to this point. I feel that it taught me the real fun of being an actress.

◆ The next big role I want to do is a love story
――This summer, you’re busy shooting Tamiou, did you made memories?
【Jiyoung】 I went to see underwater fireworks in Tateyama, Chiba! We had originally planned to go with our off in July. But there was a typhoon, it was a shock that I want to cry. “But I wanted to go there no matter what!”, I begged our staff, so they found fireworks in tateyama, and we went. The beautiful fireworks raised out from the sea and was in front of the eyes, I was very impressed.
――In instagram, your cat, Leon is frequently appearing.
【Jiyoung】 When I kept that kid, my life has changed (laughs) We have dogs in Korea. But I’m alone now so having a dog is impossible. I worried about having a cat for one month so I went to buy one. We met in April and I thought “It’s this kid!”. He’s still 6 months old.
――Is your cat actually that cute?
【Jiyoung】 Cute at its own pace, running away within 10 seconds of hugging, he’s completely my unrequited love (laughs). But, before going to bed at night, he melts and comes. When morning comes, he’s so cute and it’s unavoidable. I worry when there’s work, when I come home he comes and pick me through the door going meow meow. But it’s goodbye when there’s food. The feeling is like “I waited for this, not you” (laughs)
――From Autumn, Tamiou will reach its climax, and it will be 1 year of your debut as an actress. Do you expect some outlook?
【Jiyoung】 In Tamiou, I was happy to show everyone that “Actress Jiyoung has also this side”. From this, Assassination Classroom will be showing in Korea. After attending the presscon, the next work will also start. Probably this year will end in a blink. From now I played the roles of a yokai, a Russian, oyaji, there was not a normal role (laughs) The next big role I want to do is a love story, a normal girl.
――Surely, we want to see Jiyoung’s beauty in a normal role.
【Jiyoung】 I want to do a story of youth of a 21 year old girl, and I want to challenge action as always. I’m also studying for my Hollywood dreams. Last year, I went to Sundance Film Festival to see a friend, someday I want to go there with my own work.

She said, “I was active in Japan for about a year, and it really wasn’t easy. It was actually really hard. It wasn’t simply something you can do by speaking a little bit of Japanese. I thought, ‘This isn’t something that just anyone can do.’”

She continued, “I learned a lot over the last one year. I studied abroad in London, and I grew a lot through the experience. I was lonely living alone in Japan, but my family, friends, and fans cheered me on, so although it was lonely and difficult, it was a year in which I was able to grow.”

19th Detective Conan Film Casts Former Kara Idol Kang Jiyoung

The official website for the 19th Detective Conan film, Detective Conan: Gōka no Himawari (Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno), announced on Monday that the film has cast Kang Jiyoung, a former member of South Korean pop girl group KARA. She will play a guide in an art museum, the setting of the film.

Kang Jiyoung, a huge Detective Conan fan, had informed the production of her desire to participate in the film when it was already close to completion, and the production hurriedly created a role for her to play.

The film’s story centers on Conan as he tries to track down Kaito Kid, who supposedly steals a replica of one of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers paintings during an auction. (A real version of the painting depicted was owned by a Japanese collector, until it was destroyed during World War II. A version of the painting depicted in the movie was recently recreated.) The tagline on the announcement image for the film, which was drawn by original manga creator Gosho Aoyama, reads “You will solve this? This art…”

Kang Jiyoung has previously been cast in the Assassination Classroom live-action film as Irina Jelavic, and in the live-action Jigoku Sensei Nube film as Yukime.

Detective Conan: Gōka no Himawari will open in Japan on April 18, and will feature Kaito Kid, as well as a theme song from the rock band Porno Graffitti.

Kobun Shizuno is returning to direct the film, and Takeharu Sakurai is writing the script. Katsuo Ono is again to composing the music. Minami Takayama is reprising her role as Conan Edogawa with Wakana Yamazaki as Ran Mōri, Rikiya Koyama as Kogorō Mōri, and Kappei Yamaguchi as Kaito Kuroba/Kaitō Kid.
