ARTICLE } Jiyoung challenges the Oyaji (old man) role

Every week during the broadcast of Friday night drama “Tamiou” (TV Asahi), the leader of the Kazuhito party: Kuramoto (Kusakari Masao) had interchanged bodies with the university student: Murano Erika, played by Jiyoung, whom we had interviewed.

For her, this will be the first “Japanese role”. The role was setting articles like “the mysterious university student”, as it was very mysterious at first. In the third episode aired on August 14, the shocking truth was revealed. “At first, Erika is just the mysterious university student. But at the end of episode 3, it is now evident that my role is replaced by the old man Kuramoto. It is the main highlight, I think. This time my body is a young girl’s, but inside is an old man (laughs)” Jiyoung said.

The role looks like a beauty model and the inside is an old man, with that, Jiyoung looks at the old man everyday to be aware. “First, I’m trying to have a low voice when speaking. Then having a crab legs gesture when walking, and also the sitting posture. Whatever it takes to look like an old man, I do research everyday. And the private me also become an old man. (laughs)”

The role Jiyoung playing is not your typical old man. The leader of the opposite party of Muto cabinet, “Mr. Dandy-ism” Kusakari-san. “The dialogue of the political system is very difficult. Also, when you say “Kusakari-san”, he is characterized as a big actor. When playing the habits of each other, it is already determined, but it’s still difficult. The facial expressions also when talking, Kusakari-san before occasionally speaking gives a unique high voice. Like “Hmm,” (laughs) I wonder if I can ever do that successfully.” Jiyoung said as she analyzes the characteristics and the hardships.

In addition, Jiyoung gave an unexpected reaction when asked to imagine if she had been replaced with her real father. “I also hate entering old man I don’t know, (laughs) but I think if I’ll be replaced with my dad, it’s not interesting. The thing itself is interesting as gender changes, it’s fresh.”
Speaking of Tamiou, off-shots of the filming is published there, whoever cast hits the scene was having fun, and of course Jiyoung also seems having fun among good company. “Though we’re still getting used to each other, shooting was always fun. Even in extreme heat, everyone is always happily chatting. Since it’s comedy, we’re talking seriously on how to make it more funny. The other day, I sang with Suda Masaki-san, and he was playing the guitar! It was really fun!”, she said with large eyes shining.

Your impression of Endo Kenichi and Suda Masaki was different than I have imagined. “Endo-san has a scary image at first, but when you meet him closely and see him perform Sho-kun, I can’t help but to see it cute (laughs) On the day of cranking, in the Yamikumo where changed bodies happened, I was there with Suda-san, before the exchange, he was very feminine, but after it, he immediately changed to a man, it was very cool!”

Also, the appearance of the cast to dance together in the ending song “Stress Free” has attracted topic. Especially Jiyoung’s dancing, described as “Kirekkire!” (Graceful, Cute) “It’s not usual that all the actors dance together, right? That’s why it’s fun! Also, it was a long time since I danced, (laughs), I was amused.” Jiyoung said as she smiled.

At the Tamiou event, there was a question, “What if you exchanged bodies with someone (something)?” Then Jiyoung said “Anyone? Then my cat would be good (laughs) he’s the only family I have in Japan, that kid is absolutely free on his own. Badly speaking, he’s a little shameless…but if I would become like him then I would like it to be that way.” she replied cutely.
Then, since it’s a political drama, we requested a manifesto from Jiyoung. “It’s already one year since I started being an actress in Japan, ‘Tamiou’ is very big for me, and I think is a very important work. My first Japanese role, and first old man role (laughs) That’s why I’ll keep on practicing my dialogues, do my best in playing a hard role, for the next work, Jiyoung herself will step up.”,Jiyoung gave a strong declaration.

Finally Jiyoung thinks of Tamiou’s highlight. “Kuramoto is Taizan’s eternal rival. They might be friends along ago, it now embraces the emotions that comes in competition with political parties. But with the exchange of bodies of the parent and son, perhaps their bonds will deepen. This drama also have warm stories about family, and of course about politics. Also, you can see Jiyoung you haven’t seen before! Jiyoung x Oyaji collaboration, Please look forward to OyaJiyoung! (laughs)”
